Space / Interval on the basis of the Japanese notion of "Ma" : the dynamics of void and time

Cette thèse porte sur la question de l’intervalle japonais, Ma 間, son esthétique, sa philosophie, et interroge les notions de spatialité et de temporalité, essentielles dans ma pratique artistique. Mes vidéos et mes photographies sont imprégnées de la culture japonaise du cheminement, du milieu et du vide. Mes images ouvrent un chemin à la fois physique et mental, transposent l’expérience de déambulation et le sentiment de nature. Il est question de polarités entre naturel et artificiel, visible et invisible, continuité et discontinuité, lesquels supposent errance et méditation. Institué en œuvre d’art, l’intervalle japonais est une voie envisagée comme une expérience spatio-temporelle à vivre, rythmée par ses nuances, ses contrastes autant que ma respiration et ma marche. Constamment, il s’opère une tension entre phénomènes éphémères et un temps infini, source de petites séquences “haïku” focalisées sur des choses ordinaires : événements fugaces touchant à la perception du présent. Le poème court révèle une présence dans l’intervalle de l’instant, telle qu’elle apparaît aux yeux du poète. L’objectif de cette thèse est de montrer que les choses, à la fois séparées et reliés, ne sont pas opposées mais, s’envisagent comme un théâtre de relations ; elles concentrent l’attention sur l’instant ; elles révèlent la conscience esthétique du vide et du silence. L’intervalle japonais se conçoit comme une respiration, un temps cyclique dans lequel on peut s’unir au vide et entretenir une relation dynamique avec son environnement. Cet espacement d’alternance propice à la méditation et à la poésie, met à notre portée une relation authentique avec l’autre et le milieu.This thesis focuses on the question of the Japanese interval, Ma 間, its aesthetics and its philosophy, and explores the notions of space and time essential to my own artistic work. My videos and photographs are steeped in the Japanese culture of passage, environment and void. My images open a physical and mental path, transposing an experience of walking and a feeling for nature. They concern the polarities between nature and artifice, the visible and the invisible, continuity and discontinuity. Their quest for harmony and new emotions rests on a practice of wandering and meditation. When it becomes art, the Japanese interval is considered a spatio-temporal experience, a way of living punctuated by nuances and contrasts, by one’s breathing and walking. A tension is constantly involved between ephemeral phenomena and infinite time. It is the source of small haiku sequences focused on ordinary things, fleeting events that affect our perception of the present. In the interval of the moment the short poem reveals a presence such as it appears before the poet. Its clarity and sobriety subtly inculcate a sensibility for ephemeral phenomena. The goal of this thesis is to show that things, being at once separate and connected, are not opposed to one another but are rather a theater of relations; they focus attention on the moment and convey a sense of emptiness and silence. The Japanese interval is conceived as a form of breathing. On the basis of this cyclical time, one can unite with the void and maintain a dynamic relation with the environment. Conducive both to meditation and poetry, this alternation places an authentic relationship with the other and our surroundings within our reach
